47 Songs That Got Me Through 2017

47 Songs That Got Me Through 2017

It’s been said many times, but it bears repeating: 2017 was trash. And not like the decent smelling kind that you barely notice in your mama’s “good” bathroom marked for guest use only. Nah, this was that summertime in Brooklyn, with last weekend’s brunch cooking on the side of the street awaiting pick up, type of TRASH.

But thank God for the music.

If it wasn’t for albums like DAMN and CTRL serving as the soundtrack and compass for my life, who’s to say if I’d make it past May.

With all of the amazing music we were gifted this year, you would think we did something to deserve it. But after further examination, you would find that it was just the universe’s gentle way of saying, “Here, you’re going to need this.”

From Cardi B sweeping the charts with her Grammy-nominated breakout hit, “Bodak Yellow,” to Playboi Carti empowering us to Miley Rock in the face of our ops, and Miguel casting our cares away as we Luke Skywalked on our haters, both real and phantom, it almost makes you forget we’re on the brink of an economic collapse and possible nuclear war. *smiles nervously*

I got goosebumps reflecting on where I was when each song listed below dropped. Each track I’ve compiled for you here is an embodiment of the many ups and downs I’ve experienced from January 1 until this very moment. They’ve made me dance, cry, sing at the top of my lungs, and most importantly, twerk.

Send your praises to the Most High while you reminisce about all the good music He bestowed on us this year. Here are my top 47:
