Comfort with Self: In Style by Aley Arion
hurt: (verb) a person, object, place, etc. that is most likely ugly or extremely unattractive
Thanks, Urban Dictionary.
You know, I wasn't always the glowing, chocolate goddess you see today. In fact, I was quite the opposite: insecure, painfully shy, and man, why wasn't anyone kind enough to suggest that I get glasses that actually fit my face? (shoutout to Medicare though)
In essence, I was hurt. And I own that. I've only been 24 years old for 11 days now, but I feel that in this small amount of time, I've gotten... badder. I know, conceited much, right?
As you may know, I describe my road to 24 with words like terror and excitement; but can you blame me? Gradually approaching the quarter century mark was/is intimidating, highly introspective, and caused me to analyze every move I've made up until this point only to wonder what they've lead me to. Still, there's something I've overlooked... and it's a new glow. That's right, getting older mean getting finer; what a blessing! It's that matured, I'm-growing-into-myself, owning-who-I-am look that I've been waiting for since my pre-teen years and I think my time has finally come. Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't all about outward appearance. It's about the confidence of accepting that you are who you are. That if God wanted me to have anything else to make me "prettier," He would have given it to me. That the acne scars I developed from picking my face for all those years are just fine and will go away with time as long as I stick to my skin care regimen. That my dark skin was prepared at just the right temperature before coating my bones and protecting my flesh. That my vision is terrible, and I'll be doomed to wear glasses for the rest of my life, and that's okay too! That I am enough. Every day isn't going to feel like this; accepting, loving. Still, it says a lot about your personal progress to accept those flaws, lovingly.
Here's to be growing up and glowing up.
